Billion Dollar Budget

The Senate Majority met for almost three hours yesterday to discuss pending budget decisions. Read Glen Warchol’s story to get a feel for where we are, at this point. We will continue the discussion on January 10. You can also read the DesNews story here.

Are you saying Glen Warchol's story is better than the D-News story?

Yes and no. Delving into subtleties here – we felt Glen Warchol’s story was more consistent with what actually happened in the three hour caucus on Tuesday.

The Deseret Morning News story was written by two proficient reporters and is significantly accurate – but it conjures up a higher level of “political posturing” than what actually occurred. Not that some people don’t play reindeer games, they just took a back seat in the Senate Caucus Meeting, so it struck us as odd to read about imagined or assumed gamesmanship in the article.

We didn’t hold a special meeting to craft a reaction to the House Plan. Their numbers weren't discussed. We held a caucus meeting to help prepare for the upcoming session.

Sometimes sincere people just do their work. In this case it meant starting to understand the upcoming state budget options in preparation for making sensible decisions.

The Senate decided to be careful. That’s not strategic gamesmanship. That’s doing their job.

The Deseret News article is not without it’s high points, however. Majority Leader Knudson’s comments are worth emphasis:

"I've seen good times and I've seen bad times for revenue," Knudson said. "For us to be excited about tax cuts and such, we need to be sure these revenues will continue into the future, or we will just have to come back in two years and raise taxes."

The other reason - the real reason - we didn’t give the Deseret News Story more of a comment is because it features Senator Bramble’s portrait. I mean, seriously, it's Christmas. Why scare the children?

The Deseret News has written this simple pre-session story wrong for three years in a row. It is costing them their credibility. At some point it should cost Bob Bernick his job.
