By John Valentine
President of the Utah Senate
You can now visit the Senate Offices via our
new web cam.
The camera is currently located on top of the clock on the west wall of my office, but we’ll move it around. These are your offices too - so make yourself at home.

The idea here is simple: You own the government. You pay for it. You elect us and pay us and you live with the consequences of what we do. Yet, many citizens are fundamentally detached from the policy work of the legislature. That can be dangerous.
The new
SenateCam is one more little tool to try to bridge that gap -- to try and break down a little of the “inner-corridors-of-power” mystique. It seemed like a good idea at the time.
We’ll see.
Let me know what you think.

Foghat rocks!
A few notes:
* You may need to download Active X to your computer. If so, click on the notification that will pop up; it will only take a moment to download.
* Mac and Firefox users: the camera only works with Internet Explorer on a PC. We’re working on a fix.
* Anyone can control the camera. I don’t know how it’s going to work if multiple people start fighting over the controls. Try to play nice.
* Utah employs a part-time, citizen legislature. In other words, you’re not liable to see a lot of visible motion the General Session begins in January.
* We have another feature in the works that we think you will enjoy. Look for it in the next few weeks.
Will the House get one too so we can observe bicamera behavior?
More like a toy than a tool. I fail to see the point in this.
Bah, Humbug!!
What a great toy and tool! You know, I've notice all of the greatest tools are also pretty cool toys. (Consider power tools)
Kudos to the Senate Site for bringing Utahns this much closer to policy making process.
This is so awesome! I think this addition to the senate site will give us a feeling of being involved even more. I think a thank you is in order for those great minds on the Hill who came up with this. Pretty cool.
We're fundamentally detached from the policy work of the legislature not because we don't have webcams, but because you don't have hearing aids.
And a more condescending post I've yet to read anywhere.
Butthead: This video sucks!
Beavis: I don't like stuff that sucks.
(Cam rotates upward to view the ceiling)
Beavis: Is this a Lionel Ritchie video?
Butthead (singing, poorly): Dancing on the ceiling...
Beavis: I thought politicians got all the hot chicks. I don't see any chicks in this video.
Butthead: You have to go down to the House where Greg Hughes is.
Beavis: Hughes is cool. He rules. He RULES! Huh huh huh
Butthead: Yeah. The House is so cool that they won't let you in.
Beavis: Shut up, Butthead! They let Urquhart and Dougall in.
