Guns, Votes, and Justice Delayed
The right of citizens to elect their government and the right to bear arms just collided in a way that might end our hope of timely equal enfranchisement for the State of Utah. Here is the news release from the DC Vote crowd: Washington, DC - Action on the DC Voting Rights Act (H.R. 1433) was postponed in the House earlier today when a group of members attempted to link the bill, which would give Washington, DC, its first ever voting member of Congress, with lifting the city's gun safety laws. Justice for Utah isn’t even a footnote.

My dear friend, as you know, I am convinced that the greatest single thing we can do to obtain justice for Utah, now and for generations to come, is to preserve the Constitution of the United States.
The current DC Vote proposal is unconstitutional. For conservatives, it is also incredibly shortsighted and unwise politically. It was a mistake for Utah to ever sully its credibility by linking its congressional aspirations to this terrible piece of legislation. But, thank goodness, the damage can be undone.
Like the Calvary charging to the rescue, Retired Congressman Jim Hansen, the Deseret Morning News, and the President of the United States have all publicly come out against it. As you can imagine, I am extremely proud and grateful for their actions. Hopefully, even more statesmen will come forward and say what needs to be said.
To those wise and decent folks working behind the scenes to bring about the promised presidential veto, I say: Thank you. You are heroes.
Besides retired Congressman Jim Hansen, the Deseret Morning News, and the President of the United States, I should also have included the Salt Lake County Republican Party as having publicly come out against the proposed DC Vote legislation.
A better plan to obtain "justice" for the inhabitants of the District of Columbia is to pass a constitutional amendment designating them—at least for election purposes—as citizens of the state of Maryland.
Maryland would benefit from having more state tax payers, and an additional seat in the House of Representatives. District of Columbia residents benefit by being able to participate in elections for both houses of Congress. The United States benefits by protecting the Constitution. The Democratic Party benefits by gaining an additional Congressional seat. The Republican Party benefits by heading off the eventual addition of two more Democratic senators.
Utah benefits by gaining its fourth congressional seat legitimately, thus, maintaining its credibility when it finds itself having to defend the Constitution the next time its supremacy is threatened.
Hey there! Happy to be here. Looking forward to sharing some good music with the masses!
