Ric,
Aloha from Maui! I enjoyed reading your blog today from an Internet cafe by the beach. Life is good.
Interesting parallel between Hawaii and Utah. In Utah, we have a Republican supermajority. In Hawaii, there is a Democratic supermajority.
If I thought the battle to bring some balance to the political discussion in Utah was hard, I can only imagine what Hawaii Republicans are up against. As it stands now, the Hawaii House is comprised of 43 Democrats and only 8 Republicans! No wonder it is paradise on earth (j/k) :-) No I'm NOT in favor of gay marriage. But the Democrats can be proud of a lot here - For instance, in Maui, EVERY beach is a PUBLIC beach. There are multi-million dollar properties lining just about every beach but those same beaches can be enjoyed by everyone. It was a great reminder to me of the values we share in America of promoting the general welfare and commonwealth of our society. I feel that Utah Democrats embrace these values which is why, even though I am quite conservative on many issues, that I find myself at home with the growing number of moderate Republicans but more so with community-minded Utah Democrats.
So, as much as I'm enjoying Hawaii, you're going to have to put up with me some more!!!
Mahalo...Craig.
Craig:
Buenos Dias from Habana!
If you like community-minded Hawaii, you'll love community-minded Cuba. It's not just the beaches that are publicly owned here. The community owns nearly all of the means of production. There is no greed here! No vouchers or charter schools either.
In addition to beautiful beaches, we have the world's best cigars. Next time you're in Habana, I'll treat you and your Utah Democrat friends to genuine Cohibas, not the knock-off capitalist Cohibas you get in the States.
Of course, economic growth here is about as bad as it is in Hawaii.
Venceremos!
Fidel and Raul (mostly Raul)
Oh, I see what you did there.
Democrats are commies. Very witty.
A little too thin-skinned there, JMB?
Craig was cool and classy, as per usual, and Fidel was hilarious.
JM Bell is JM Bell; we're all familiar with his shtick. At least he's witty.
Hawaii looks great. What are we all doing here? Let's merge the two states and have balance between the two parties!
I'm fairly sure Godwin's law encompasses Castro, too.
Y'all have fun (sipping cold drink).
A Utah-Hawaii merger, can't think of any reason not to, other than perhaps the new name (Hawutah? Utaii?). A small price to pay for political balance.
Hmmm. How about HowlieWaii?
