Welcome to The Senate Site
State of the State [of Utah]
Governor Huntsman provided a healthy dose of optimism, energy and vision tonight in his State of the State speech. Here's the text. Watch it here. Rich Piatt records a post-speech reaction from the Senate President and Speaker of the House.

Dude, Ric, fix the Senate Cam.
It's working for me. What's happening on your end?
I just now had time to listen to the Governor's State of the State Address.
It was very inspiring, however, I did notice a few conflicts of interest.
On one hand the Governor would like to address the problem of Air Quality. On the other hand he wants to build more highways. More highways encourage more drivers on the road, more drivers put more carbon gases in the air, and more carbon gas leads to worsening of the air quality on the Wasatch Front.
What's happening with Trax? Trax is cheap transportation for the commuters, uses electricity rather than fossil fuels, and gets people out of their cars and off the existing highways.
Now I realize that the Cities have to come up with the funds to build Trax through their vicinities, but what if the State were to invest more funds into incentive programs for the Cities, to encourage the Cities to put the funds forward for Trax development; and invest less of the money into new highways. We would have "win win" situation that could help with commuter congestion and help to improve the air quality on the Wasatch Front.
Perhaps a plan to get City, County, and State Government working together to expand the Trax system to the outer lying areas of the Wasatch Front? I would gladly pay my tax dollars to get a Trax system all the way out to Tooele, or at least as far as Magna.
