Winning friends and influencing people

By Curtis S. Bramble
Senate Majority Leader

So, the Sierra Club and HEAL Utah have decided to oppose something else. They seem to have worked themselves into a degree of outrage over a bogeyman of an energy bill they say is "nothing more than a wolf in sheep's clothing that could stall renewable energy development in Utah for decades." They say it is full of "handouts, caveats, and loopholes." And so on, and so on.

Problem is, the bill has yet to be written.

All we have is a draft that will serve as a starting point for a stakeholders meeting tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon.

A meeting to which they have been invited.

Why not join the discussion? If there is something in the draft bill they think will be less than effective, why not roll up the sleeves and assist with the real work of getting the bill right?

Taking to the streets when others are willing to engage doesn't seem to indicate a real desire to solve problems.

We thank Majority Leader Bramble for inviting us to participate in the drafting of the energy bill. We have already submitted four amendments for consideration and look forward to receiving feedback at this afternoon's meeting.

We thank the Majority Leader for the spirit of the bill, which is to increase renewable energy production by state utilities. We oppose those portions of the bill that hinder this goal.

It is admirable to get folks together to do the hard work of producing the best that can be accomplished at the present time, with the current resources. Thank you Senator Bramble for providing leadership in this matter.

One editorial comment. The Senator apparently believes that low or zero carbon is equal to renewables.

This is addressing just one (albeit large) attribute of renewables. Others include the fact that renewables need no fuel, produce no waste, consume little or no water, have no requirement separate, sequester or store anything.

This bill is not mainly about renewables, they doen't even make the title.
