Good Question
From Tom at alt-tag.com: Utah does pretty well with e-government, but one thing continues to bug me: our election contributions reporting system. The key point is this: How much more powerful could it be if it exposed the data in a published RESTful XML format, suitable for use in mashups?

Other than not knowing what RESTful XML format or mashups are, I totally agree.
Hey V of U - good to see you back.
"Mashup" was vague blip on my radar screen too until Senator Greiner outed with his Ogden City PD SpatialKey Heatmap and innovated beyond every other PD in the state and maybe the nation. Still watching to evaluate bang for the buck, but I think it's going to be significant.
Mashups recombine digital information from various sources in new ways.
RESTful systems are a useful tool to enable ad-hoc integration - non-RESTful systems can stand in the way.
Awesome new world.
