I feel badly for the Senate president and his wife's frustration in not getting justice. But in his position in state government, the Senator should be directing his anger - and constructive voting power to overhaul the judiciary and department of corrections. If the state had more room to house inmates, this guy would most likely not have been given a get out of jail free card. There will always be people who drink to excess despite more stringent liquor law. Drug and alcohol abuse are addictions and it is hard if not impossible to make someone quit. Addiction is a owerful motivator for continued abuse. There is not law that is going to stop any addiction. These people can simply go out of state and get their booze if things get too tough in Utah. It seems to me that proper funding of the judiciary, court system and corrections department would at least keep these people locked up the way they should be. Forget about the liquor laws. Concentrate on the punishment. That way, addicts will thing twice before driving a car under the influece of drugs and alchol.
This is exactly why we need a three strikes law AND chronic misdemeanor laws. Our judges and prosecutors will continue to treat these guys like prized "repeat customers", and NEVER put them away.
