I think this legislation is definitely a step in the right direction, but Gov. Huntsman and Sen. Valentine are ignoring an even bigger and more costly problem: nightclub violence. Underage drinking is obviously important to prevent, but violence constitutes a far greater risk and expense to entire communities because it hurts everybody, including the victims, taxpayers, and makes cities even more vulnerable to major crime when so many cops are deployed to a single venue because of a major fight or shooting.
My venue participates in the "Club Watch Community Connection" (google it) for this very reason. Since we joined, our underage drinking and violence problems have been reduced by at least 60% in less than a month. No simple ID scanner is going to achieve those kinds of results. As a venue operator, I hope more people in Utah participate in the program because it keeps all our venues safe from both underage drinking and more severe crime and violence. Other venue owners can learn more at http://clubwatch.com.
