Decision
By Sheldon KillpackI spent the evening considering my options and discussing them with my wife, family and trusted friends. My heart weighs heavy. I have a tremendous amount of respect for the legislative process, my legislative colleagues and for my constituents. At this time the Legislature would be a distraction from what is most important and, frankly, I find that I have become a distraction to the Legislature. In light of that I have decided to tender my resignation as Majority Leader and as a Utah State Senator, effective immediately. I am sincerely grateful and touched for the outpouring of support and love expressed to my family by so many of my constituents and friends. Thank you.

It is impossible to say how much you will be missed, both on a personal level as well as a legislative one. You were a true leader in the Senate. We wish only the best for you and your family.
Brook said it well.
Best wishes to you and your family, you will be missed.
You have such integrity in the way you are dealin with this. You will be remembered with the class that you have shown. Thank you for all of the hard work you have done for this state.
Integrity? Class? Leader? Please. After his father was killed by a drunk driver (as he said many times during his campaign), told his consituents he was working against drunk drivers, and spewing his apparent hypocrisy... I would be disheartened if ANYONE looked up to this man. I used to be a huge supporter... Now I'm just ashamed to have been represented by someone like this.
Please don't just kiss up because he was a senator. If it were anyone else all of you would be having a totally different reaction. Shame on you Sheldon.
Sheldon, I have read this in CA and am truly heartbroken for you and your family. I am your friend, always. I will keep you and your family in my prayers. I know that none of us can honestly say we have never made a mistake. Each of us has needed forgiveness at one time or another. Some mistakes are just more visible than others. Love to your family.
He's not a Senator anymore so I guess it's okay to look up to him according to Alex. Everyone makes mistakes. He did so much for the people he represented, at least you got that. Use your power as a voter and elect someone else.
I made a post with one word 'hypocrite', and it was deleted.
The leadership of the Senate are hypocrites who can give it but they cant take it.
correction, they were not deleted, I looked at the wrong article
my error, sorry
I do wish you would have asked your constituents what they wanted. Perhaps you would have come to a different decision. You have handled your mistake admirably in a way others should mirror in their own lives. Hopefully you can find a way to put this behind you as quickly as possible. But for the grace of God go I.
I enjoy seeing the self-righteous hoisted up on a petard enabled by their own sanctimonious efforts as much as the next person.
But I think Salt Lake Tribune blogger Glen Warchol has it right in hoping that Sheldon Killpack -- like Urban Meyer -- rethinks his resignation:
"Any transgressions and legal hassles stemming from the traffic stop Thursday night would only have made him a better lawmaker. There's nothing like a major F'-up in life to make a person more compassionate, open to other viewpoints and just all around easier to get along with."
Utahns would benefit from a legislator sensitized to the dysfunctional school-to-prison pipeline, and not beholden to the donors/voters who profit from the anal rape camps the State of Utah and the incumbent political class maintains in Draper and Gunnison.
