District 25 :: Cache and Rich Counties
I was born in Logan Utah on September 25, 1940 and raised ten miles north in Smithfield. I grew up fishing, hunting, and playing sports. My interests now consist of reading, jogging, walking, and especially traveling.
I married my sweetheart, Alice Thorpe, from Logan in 1964. We have five children, three daughters and two sons. Two of my daughters are currently living in Japan with their families. My oldest daughters husband works at a civil engineer helping with environmental projects in Yokohama, Japan. My second oldest lives in Okinawa where her husband serves as a Chaplin at the U.S. Air Force Base.
My education started with a bachelors degree from Utah State University. I then went on to Law School at the University of Utah and graduated in 1967. After Law School I moved back to Logan and started a law firm, Hillyard and Gunnell, with a fellow school graduate. I have been practicing law there for the last 39 years.
In Logan, I served as the President of the Chamber of Commerce in 1977 and the Cache County Republican Party Chair from 1972-1976. My experience as a legislator started in 1980 when I was elected to the House of Representatives. In 1985 I was elected to the Senate, where I continue to serve.
